In July 1971, the institute was constituted as the University of Cochin through an act of the state government of Kerala. The University of Cochin was further re‐constituted in February 1986 as its present name – Cochin University of Science and Technology – (CUSAT), Kochi. Admission Process:
Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) has a clear process for accepting students for both undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) courses. This guide explains the main steps to get into the university and join the programs they offer. This makes it easier for students who want to study there.
Step 1: CUSAT CAT (Computer-Based Admission Test)
To apply for UG courses at CUSAT, you must do the CUSAT CAT exam, which is done on a computer. Check the college website for all the details and dates.
Step 2: Online Application and Registration
After checking that you’re eligible, you can start the online registration for the CUSAT CAT. You can edit your application until the closing date. If you need help, email the college’s helpdesk.
Step 3: Application Submission and Fee Payment
Check the college website for the last day to submit your application and pay the fee. Once paid, you can’t get the fee back. The university will take 3-10 working days to approve the applications.
Step 4: Application Verification and Approval
The university will check and approve the application. If there are mistakes, they’ll email you. Those approved can download the confirmation page from their profiles.
Step 5: Compulsory Test for B.Tech Programs
Everyone applying for B.Tech programs, except B.Tech Marine Engineering, must do a test under the CUSAT CAT for admission.

Eligibility Criteria for Undergraduate Programs:
- A pass in the +2 Pass exam of the State of Kerala or any other exam equivalent with Maths, Chemistry and Physics as optional subjects obtaining atleast 50% score in Maths along with 50% total in Chemistry, Maths and Physics.
- Applicants from the categories of Kerala Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities can apply provided the candidate holds minimum pass marks in the qualifying exams.
- Kerala’s SEBC students from the non-creamy layer group will be eligible to apply for 5% relaxation in the minimum required score for the qualifying exams.
Eligibility Criteria for Undergraduate Programs (Lateral Entry)
- As on 1 July of the current academic year, the applicant should be 25 years.
- Any three-year Diploma in Engineering/Technology accredited by the Department of Technical Education, with a minimum 60% score.
- Applicants attended 3-year diploma in Plastic Technology and Diploma in Plastic Mould Technology offered by CIPET with not less than 60% marks are eligible.
- Applicants from the Kerala Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe can apply provided they have obtained minimum pass marks in the qualifying exams.
- SEBC candidates of Kerala from the non-creamy layer group can apply 5% relaxation in the minimum marks for the qualifying exams.
Admission Process for Postgraduate Programs:
- For part-time students, admission will be on the basis of the list of the rank published by giving weightage to qualifying degree marks, and the admission test organized by the Department as well as the number of years of experience after receiving the degree.
- No separate Common Admission Test by the institution.
- Candidates are advised to take a print of the confirmation page and keep in
- custody for future requirements.
- Applicants are not required to dispatch any documents to the University unless requested by the University.
Eligibility Criteria for Postgraduate Programs:
- Applicants with atleast 60% marks or equivalent CGPA Grade in B.Tech Engineering Degree from any accredited institute holding valid GATE score / National Eligibility Test are eligible to apply.
- Without GATE / NET, candidates can apply on the basis of performance in the Departmental Admission Test.
- Exam of any other institute accepted by this college as equivalent, with atleast 60% marks/6.5 CGPA.
