Hello Aspirants! I am Dr. Pratiksha Gupta, Senior Quality & Research Expert at CareerMudhra. I will guide you by sharing everything you need to know about the MDS Admission Through Management Quota in this article.

Are you a dental aspirant who wants to study MDS in the best institutions, but is concerned about your low NEET scores? In India, there are around 264 private dental colleges, including 34 deemed universities that offer MDS admission through management quota.

Instead, management quota admission allows you to take admission to the top private MDS colleges in India, even with a lower NEET score

This article is about the Management Quota MDS admission, along with the admission procedure, top colleges, and fee structure. I will begin with the admission process, so that you will get an overview before getting into the details.

MDS Admission Through Management Quota Procedure

MDS direct admission without NEET is considered illegal, and was ceased by the Dentists (Amendment) Act, 2016. All students must qualify in the NEET-MDS examination conducted by the NBE and attend the counselling sessions conducted by the respective state counselling authorities for private dental colleges, and the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) for deemed universities. I will explain each stage involved in the admission process below.

  1. Step 1: Registration & Fee Payment

NEET-MDS qualified students must register on their preferred state or MCC counselling portal by providing the necessary personal and academic information. They must upload the necessary documents and also pay the prescribed registration fee by the authorities.

  2. Step 2: Document Verification

Candidates must attend the document verification and present all the necessary original certificates with required photocopies. In some states, document verification is conducted at the time of admission at the allotted college. So, students must regularly check the updates and notifications on the counselling website to get proper instructions.

  3. Step 3: Merit List & Choice Filling

A merit list is published on the counselling website with the names of eligible candidates for choice filling. Candidates must choose the colleges and courses in order of priority under private dental colleges or deemed universities, based on their preference.

  4. Step 4: Seat Allotment

Seat allotment is usually conducted in multiple rounds (Round 1/ Round 2/ Round 3/ Stray Vacancy Round), and the results are published on the counselling portal.

  5. Step 5: Reporting to College

The final stage is to report to the allotted college to complete the further admission process, including original document submission. Candidates should pay the prescribed tuition fee to confirm their seat.

The procedure order might have slight changes based on the state and its rules and policies of counseling. Hence, students should make sure to be regularly updated about the notifications published on the counselling website.

What is the Management Quota and Why is it important

In this section, I will answer all the questions related to the management quota, such as what is management quota? Why is it important? What are its benefits?

As I mentioned in the beginning, MDS admission through management quota is also referred to as direct admission. You might be wondering why it is direct admission if the NEET-MDS qualification is mandatory for the management quota.

MDS admission through management quota is not based on merit, and the cutoff requirement is much lower compared to other seats. Which means students with lower NEET scores can secure admission without worrying about their merit ranks. One advantage of this quota is that admission to these seats doesn’t consider the domiciles of candidates.  For example, if you are a candidate from Karnataka, but you want to take MDS admission in Maharashtra, you can easily secure admission in management quota seats in private or deemed universities in Maharashtra. To put it more simply, you don’t have to be a native of a state to apply for MDS admission under management quota.

However, these are paid seats. Students will have to pay a higher fee structure for MDS courses under the management quota.

MDS Admission Through Management Quota Fees

Now that you have learned about the admission process and eligibility, let’s move on to one of the most important factors while considering a college: the fee structure. The fee structure for the MDS programs through the management quota is generally higher. These fees differ across the colleges. The private dental college fees are set by the respective college and the state fee-fixing authorities. Meanwhile, deemed universities have the autonomy to fix their own fee structure.

Below is the overview of MDS fees in different specialities offering MDS admission through management quota.

SpecialitiesTuition Fees per Annum
Conservative Dentistray & EndodonticsRs 9,00,000/- to Rs 20,00,000/-
Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Rs 9,00,000/- to Rs 20,00,000/-
Orthodontics & Dentofacial OrthopedicsRs 9,00,000/- to Rs 20,00,000/-

Oral Medicine & RadiologyRs 2,50,000/- to Rs 8,00,000/-
Public Health DentistryRs 2,50,000/- to Rs 8,00,000/-
Oral Pathology & MicrobiologyRs 2,00,000/- to Rs 8,00,000/-

The above given fees are average figures taken from the MDS colleges across India. This may change based on the colleges and the admission year.

How to choose colleges for MDS Admission through Management Quota

I will explain to you how to select a college for your dental post-graduation in a simple way. The two major things to keep in mind are the patient exposure in the college and the HOD or PG Guide in the specific college.

  • I would strictly prefer you to opt for colleges that have very good patient exposure. You are doing your post-graduation to learn more in-depth about what you studied during your UG. So make sure there are more than enough patients to treat and learn in college.
  • You should enquire through your friends and contacts about the patients. In some colleges, there will be a lot of patients, but the student-patient ratio will be worse. So also do enquire about the student-patient ratio.
  • Through your contact, you should inquire about the HOD or the Guide in a specific department of a college. I had heard many colleges have very good faculty. But they might be very harsh in treating students and teaching.
  • Don’t think about the faculty of other departments of the college. Only care for the faculty of your required department.
  • Everyone reading this knows you have to do a thesis during your dental PG. Investigate through your friends how much the expenses for a thesis during PG are under the specific HOD. I know a friend who does MDS in Endodontics and was having an expense of Rs. 1 lakh for the thesis. On the other hand, his friend is doing a thesis just for Rs. 40k.  This might help candidates who are having financial problems.

Wrap Up

MDS admission through management quota is offered in private dental colleges across India. The primary criterion for admission under this quota is to qualify in the NEET-MDS examination. Students from anywhere in India can apply for MDS admission in any state through management quota without any domicile requirements. Students must pay a higher fee structure for these seats compared to merit-based admission.

Since the competition for MDS admission through management quota is higher, understanding the process well in advance helps the students to participate in the counselling without any mistakes and secure a seat in their preferred institute. That is why you should connect with Career Mudhra, where we offer complete guidance and counselling support for dental courses. welcome to our blog on MDS admission through Management quota.
You can wait for the second round of counselling. There has been a trend of lowering of qualifying marks after the second round and before the mop up round.
You can wait and watch till that time . If the trend of lowering of qualifying percentile still persists for the MDS Session 2022 , then you will surely be eligible and can opt for the colleges and branches of your choice.
I hope that i have been able to answer your query.
      Best of Luck.

    • Dear Hassan,

NEET qualification is mandatory to join for MDS in any dental college. 50 percentile for General category and 40 percentile for other categories. There are chances that at the last moment, DCI will reduce the cut off marks if seats are vacant. But there is no guarantee of the same.

You can get colleges in MP, but you must qualify NEET MDS.

First of all there are no management or NRI seats in government dental colleges. And if you complete your MDS through mangement or NRI quota the salary will be same. The salary depends on many factors like your experience, skill etc.

    • Dear Surya,

Congrats on your qualification in NEET 2018.

The fee will be fixed by the KEA or Karnataka Examination Authority in between the counseling. With your rank, it would be possible to get a prosthodontic seat in Davengere. SDM Dharwad is unpredictable due to its high reputation.

Last year fees for NEET MDS was around 7 lakh per annum.

And about learning and torture, it completely depends on the HOD and staff there. Please do enquire through your friends regarding the same.
