Dr B R Ambedkar Institute of Dental Science and Hospital was started in the year 1990. The management of the institution is Gautham Educational and Welfare Society. It’s a Buddhist Minority Society. The society is registered under Society Registration Act 21,1860. The college is one of the DCI-approved dental colleges in India.

The college provides both BDS and MDS courses. The BDS course (Bachler of Dental Surgery) is recognized by the Ministry of Health Medical Education and Family Welfare Government of India, New Delhi. The college is recognized by the Dental Council of India, New India.

DR B R Ambedkar Institute of Dental Science and Hospital is permanently affiliated with Magadh University Bodh Gaya (Bihar).

The Managing Trustee and Secretary of Gautham Education and Welfare Society are Sri R N Rai. The institution has a long service in the field of education. The institution is trained to promote higher education in the city of Bihar.

The college was established in the memory of Dr B R Ambedkar. So, the name came as B R Ambedkar Institute of Dental Science.

The courses provided by the college are Bachler of Dental Surgery (BDS) and Master of Dental Surgery (MDS).

The Bachler of Dental Surgery is a five years course. Four years of academics and one year of compulsory rotary internship. Students must complete the compulsory internship. Students who are failed to complete internships won’t be given a permanent certificate from the university.

The MDS or Master of Dental Surgery is a three-year course.

The college conducts educational programs, seminars, outside speakers, paper presentations, and poster presentations.

WHAT IS THE ADMISSION PROCEDURE FOR BDS?

  • The candidate must have qualified NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) UG entrance examination conducted by the National Board of Education (NBE). The college is run with the approval of the Dental Council of India under the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare Government of India.
  • The candidate must have minimum cut-off marks which are set by the CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) under the government of India.
  • For the candidates of the general category, they should have a minimum cut-off of 50 per cent set by the CBSE under the government of India.
  • The candidate under the general category shall get a relaxation of 05 percentage minimum cut-off marks which is set by the CBSE.
  • The candidate under other backward classes/ Scheduled caste/ scheduled tribes shall get 10 per cent discounts off the minimum cut-off marks set by the CBSE under the government of India.
  • The admission for BDS is taken according to the merit rank list.

Apart from this, the candidate must have followed all the regulations of the Dental Council of India.

  • The candidate must have qualified NEET PG conducted by the National Board of Examination.
  • The candidate must have minimum cut-off marks, below which you are not eligible for the MDS.
  • The candidate must have completed a BDS course from a recognized university in India.
  • The selection of admission will be strictly based on the merit list prepared on the basis of NEET as notified by the centre and State governments.

WHAT IS THE FEE STRUCTURE?

  • For MDS the course fee is 6 lakhs per year, which has to be paid for all three consecutive years.

Library

The college has a huge library with stocks of books. The library contains a variety of books like journals, dental guides, dental and medical question papers, etc.

The journals are updated and all recent journals are available in the college library.

The digital library is also available with a sufficient number of computers. This helps the students to get updated their knowledge.

College also conducts educational tours for students around various parts of India.

Hostel facilities

Hostel facilities are available for both boys and girls. The undergraduate and postgraduate hostels are separated. In the hostel, they have separate mess facilities and indoor games.

DEPARTMENT OF ORAL MEDICINE AND RADIOLOGY

Oral Medicine and Radiology is the non-clinical department in dentistry. It mainly deals with the evaluation of the patient, diagnosis, and treatment planning of the head and neck region.

The department posting for undergraduates starts from the third year onwards. They are supposed to record the cases of the patient, record the special cases, interpretation of the X-Ray, processing of the X-Ray, case discussions, seminar works, etc.

The department mainly deals with the non-surgical approach to the management of diseases.

They conduct Tobacco cessation programs to stop the use of Tobacco. There is a separate room in the department for the same. They conduct campaigns every year for the public this helps to educate them about the aftereffect of the use of tobacco.

The daily OP of the department is 70 patients.

The department is well equipped with all the latest machines. The radiographic investigations are carried out. Intraoral X-Ray machines, Extra Oral X-Ray machines, OPG, RVG facilities, Digital Radiography are all available in the department.

DEPARTMENT OF ORAL AND MAXILLOFACIAL SURGERY

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery deal with simple cases starting from normal extraction to major cases such as trauma.

The department posting starts from the third year onwards. When I was in my undergraduate days my favourite department was oral and maxillofacial surgery.

I used to be more enthusiastic to go to the department. In the third year, the posting days start with taking off the discussion, recording of the patient cases, and later on taking up the cases.

In the initial days, we used to take up cases such as simple extraction which is mobile, and later on, will start doing with the grossly decayed teeth, firm teeth, alveoloplasty, suturing, etc.

Apart from this students have to attend seminar works, poster presentations, etc.

The average outpatient of the department is 40.

The department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Dr B R Ambedkar Institute of Dental Science has its own major Operation Theater. A variety of surgery cases are carried out in this department.

They have an ICU for advanced care of the patient and a general hospital attached to the campus.

So all the cases related to the head and neck except the brain are referred to here.

This makes an advantage of the students like they will have a very patient flow.

DEPARTMENT OF PERIODONTOLOGY

The Department of periodontology deals with aetiology, diagnosis, and treatment planning of the diseases affecting the supporting structures of the tooth, and also they will learn about implant placement.

The Department of periodontology is one of the best departments in the college with a very good patient flow.

Both undergraduate and postgraduate are posted in the department. Cases did by the undergraduate included scaling of the teeth.

The curriculum for postgraduate includes nonsurgical procedures such as scaling, root planning, splinting of the mobile, local drug delivery, and various types of flap surgery is performed in the department.

The procedure of bone grafting for regeneration of the tissues.

DEPARTMENT OF CONSERVATIVE DENTISTRY AND ENDODONTICS

The Department of conservative dentistry and Endodontics deals with the treatment of caries, discoloured teeth, and stained teeth. It deals with aesthetic dentistry.

As the college is situated in a rural area there are many villages nearby the college which makes them with a very good patient flow to the department.

DEPARTMENT OF PEDODONTICS AND PREVENTIVE DENTISTRY

The Department of Pedodontics and preventive dentistry deals with treatment for children.

The first thing taught is the management of children, we should know how to manage children.

All the restorative treatments starting from normal filling to root canal will be thought. Apart from this various habit-breaking appliances are taught.

They have good faculty in the department to guide them.

DEPARTMENT OF ORTHODONTICS AND DENTOFACIAL ORTHOPEDICS

Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics mainly deals with the treatment of misaligned teeth.

The department is well equipped with a laboratory, sterilization room, department library, seminar room, and department computer room.

The treatments done include labial and lingual fixed orthodontics and removable and fixed myofunctional appliances.

All the recent advanced orthodontic treatments are done here.

The department of Orthodontics is under the guidance of Dr Alok Ojha. The department is well managed, disciplined and up to date with the clinical works.

DEPARTMENT OF PROSTHODONTICS CROWN AND BRIDGE

The Department of prosthodontics crown and bridge is situated on the ground floor. The department is having separate undergraduate and postgraduate sections.

The cases done in the department include a removable partial denture, complete partial denture, placement of Implant, placement of crown of a variety of materials such as zirconia crowns, full ceramic crowns, metal-ceramic crowns, etc.

The department of Prosthodontics Crown and Bridge is guided by Dr Sanjeev Kumar who is the professor and HOD of the department.

Apart from academics, the college conducts many intercollege fest and competitions.
