Established in the year 1957, Government Engineering College – (GECT),  was formerly known as the Government Engineering College Trichur. The college is an ISO 9001: 2008 certified institution and entails programs in civil, mechanical and electrical engineering branches. 

Over the years, this institution has been displaying substantial growth in all aspects of engineering education with eight undergraduate programs, thirteen postgraduate programs, and doctoral programs in engineering allied areas. The admission strength of the students accelerated from 120 during the inception of the college to 759 per year, presently.

Spread across 47,447.57 sq.m, the college has a built-up area for academic and administration purposes and entails facilities for arts, sports and games. Admission Process for Undergraduate Programs (Spot Admission):

Step-by-step procedure for B.Tech Admission

Visit the College Campus

Spot admission offers a chance for candidates to secure a spot in undergraduate programs quickly. You must visit the admission department of the college and talk to the authorities about the admission procedure and get accustomed to the atmosphere of the institution.

Step 1: Inclusion in KEAM Rank List

Ensure your name is on the KEAM Rank list, a crucial prerequisite for spot admission. Your rank determines your eligibility for consideration.

Step 2: Obtain NOC and Admission Slip

If you’re already admitted to any institution other than specified ones, obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from your current college. Also, bring your Admission Slip for reference.

Step 3: Fee Remittance

On the day of admission, pay the prescribed fee of INR 8,650 along with a caution deposit of INR 1,000. Additionally, be prepared to cover other charges such as the college PTA fund, bus fee, and cooperative society membership fee.

Eligibility Criteria for Undergraduate Programs (Spot Admission)

  • Candidates who are already admitted to any of the government or government-aided engineering colleges can register and attend the process with their Admission Slip (obtained from the college) alone.

Admission Process for Undergraduate Programs (Lateral Entry)

  • In addition to total seats, the state government of Kerala has approved 10% of the sanctioned seats for the lateral scheme. 
  • The AICTE has suggested a state-level entrance examination for the selection, in order to maintain uniformity among various schemes of diploma holders.

Eligibility Criteria for Undergraduate Programs (Lateral Entry)

  • Applicants holding diploma degrees with 60% marks and 50% for SC/ST quota applicants are eligible to apply to the third semester of the engineering degree course.
  • Candidate should attempt and pass the Entrance Examination conducted for the lateral entry scheme by the state government of Kerala. 
  • Such applicants are not required to study any deficiency papers of the first and second semesters, combined. 

Admission Process for Postgraduate Programs (Spot Admission)

  • On the day of the spot admissions, the applicant should bring all the necessary certificates in original. In case the candidate is not able to appear in person, the authorization letter should be produced.
  • The admitted candidates should remit the fee of INR 11,730  at the institute on the same day. Additional fees include a PTA fund, and a Co-op Society membership fee totaling to INR 9,000 to be paid extra on the same day.
  • Candidates admitted to any of the engineering Colleges should bring their Admission Slip obtained from the college.
  • Candidates who are already admitted to self-financing colleges ought to get their No Objection Certificate, specifying that the institute has no objection to the candidate participating in the spot admission process. Further, in the event of a candidate being selected, the institute is willing to issue the transfer certificate to the candidate.

  • Two copies of the Third Phase Allotment Memo issued by the CEE.
  • Attested SSLC Certificate or equivalent.
  • Attested +2 Certificate or equivalent.
  • Experience certificate, applicable for Ph.D. admission.
  • Transfer Certificate in original or NOC.
  • Conduct Certificate from the Institution last attended (should be valid only for 6 months from the date of issue) or Conduct certificate attested by a gazette officer (post the expiry of the validity of the Conduct Certificate).
  • Migration Certificate, applicable for students other than Kerala state board.
  • Caste certificate, if applicable (should be valid for 3 years from the date of issue).
  • Income Certificate, if applicable (should be valid for 1 year from the date of issue).
  • Physical Fitness Certificate from a registered doctor of rank not less than an assistant surgeon.

Placement and Scope

The placement cell helps and assists the students in getting their dream jobs. The placement committee adopts the required steps in navigating the demands and needs of the companies and accordingly prepares the students to match the requirements. The following facilities are available for the smooth functioning of the placements:

  • Jointly constructed by the PTA and Alumni Association, the Millennium Auditorium has a seating capacity of 400 and is equipped with an in-house PA system and projector.
  • The conference room, an air-conditioned hall, has a seating capacity of 120 and is equipped with a state-of-the-art PA system and projector, with a video conferencing facility.

The batch of 2022 of the institution received the highest number of placements. More than 75 companies participated in the placement season and rolled out 710 job offers to the students. The highest salary received by the student was INR 32 LPA, with an average salary of INR 6.8 LPA.

  • According to the NIRF 2021 rankings, the institute stood at 156 rank with a score of 34.91.
  • Government Engineering College – (GECT), Thrissur won second prize for Academic Excellence at Calicut University.
  • The women of the college led the lead Taekwondo 2022-23 and got selected to Khelo India and National Games 2023.
  • Over the years, the women’s sports team of the college secured a gold medal in the Calicut University Fencing Championship. Students were the Runners-up in the Calicut University Chess Tournament and winners in the APJAKT University Zone Chess Tournament.

Women Development Cell

The Women Development Cell focuses on the welfare of the women employees/students by addressing their grievances, organizing seminars, and workshops relating to women’s development.

The cell also provides and maintains congenial working space for women employees and students, where they are able to work, study as well as explore their talents and potential to the fullest. 

Hostel

The institution has separate men’s accommodation and women’s accommodation facilities for the students of the undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programs. While the men’s hostel has 244 rooms and can accommodate 528 students, the women’s entails 154 rooms which can accommodate 462 students. 

Central Library

The library of the institution has a collection of 68,450 books in various branches of engineering, technology and sciences.
