MDS admission is the pathway for BDS graduates who wish to pursue postgraduate specialization in dentistry. The admission process primarily requires NEET-MDS/PG qualification, followed by counselling conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) and the respective state counselling authorities.
State counselling authorities handle 50% of admissions to government dental colleges and 100% of admissions to private dental colleges under state, management, and NRI quotas. Meanwhile, the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) manages the remaining 50% of seats in government dental colleges and 100% of admissions in deemed universities through the All India Quota counselling.

How to get MDS Admission?
MDS admission is conducted by two different authorities- MCC and the state counselling authorities. NEET-MDS/PG-qualified students can only participate in the counselling for admission to both government and private dental colleges in India.
MDS Entrance Examination
You might be wondering whether direct admission is possible for MDS after completion of BDS? The answer is No. Just like NEET-UG is mandatory for BDS, there are qualifying examinations for MDS admission, which are explained below.
NEET MDS/PG
The preliminary stage of MDS admission is to qualify for the NEET-MDS or NEET-PG examination. The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) conducts these examinations. Candidates must mandatorily appear for the NEET MDS/PG exams to participate in the counselling, whether they chose to undergo the state, management, or NRI counselling.
INI-CET (Institute of National Importance Common Entrance Test)
INI-CET is conducted for MDS admission to government dental colleges, such as AIIMS, JIPMER, PGIMER, and NIMHANS. Seats are allotted through the centralized online counselling, directly managed by AIIMS, New Delhi. The INI-CET is held twice a year (every six months).
Eligibility for MDS Admission
Candidates seeking MDS admission must satisfy the following eligibility criteria.

Each round follows specific rules and eligibility conditions, which may vary from one state to another.Admission
Seat allotted candidates must report to the allotted college within the time period specified and complete the further admission procedure.
NEET-MDS Counselling
NEET-MDS counselling is conducted in 4 rounds- Round 1/ Round 2/ Round 3 (Mop-up)/ Stray Vacancy Round. Depending on the type of institution, seat category, and domicile requirements, candidates need to decide whether to participate in MCC counselling or state counselling.
Let us take a closer look at these two modes of counselling and how they differ.
MDS State Counselling
State counselling is conducted by the respective state authorities for admissions to dental colleges within the state. The counselling process covers 50% of seats in government dental colleges and 100% of seats in private dental colleges.
In government dental colleges, 50% of the seats are reserved for candidates holding the domicile of the respective state. On the other hand, private dental colleges offer admissions through state, management, and NRI quotas. While the state quota seats are generally reserved for candidates with the state domicile, the management and NRI quota seats do not have domicile restrictions, allowing students from other states to apply.
The table below provides the list of states and the authorities conducting MDS counselling.
MDS MCC Counselling
Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) counselling conducts the All India Counselling (AIQ) for admission to 50% of the seats in government dental colleges and 100% seats in deemed universities. There are no domicile restrictions; candidates from anywhere in India can participate in the MCC counselling.
NRI Admission Process
Similar to other admission quotas, candidates seeking MDS admission under the NRI quota must qualify NEET-MDS/PG. NEET-qualified NRI candidates must participate in the counselling process conducted either by the respective state authorities or through MCC.
In state MDS counselling conducted by the respective state authorities, 15% of seats in private dental colleges are reserved for NRI/OCI/PIO candidates under the NRI quota. Similarly, for deemed universities, the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) conducts All India Counselling and allocates 15% of seats under the NRI quota.
Eligibility: Candidates must be NRIs or must have a blood relative (parents/siblings/spouse/legal guardian) or a sponsor who is an NRI with a valid passport/visa proving residence abroad. They must provide notarized relationship affidavit and sponsorship affidavit from the NRI relative.
Documents Required for MDS Admission
During the counselling, candidates are instructed to upload the necessary documents online and provide the originals along with photocopies for document verification at the designated centre or allotted college.
The essential documents and certificates to be submitted for MDS admission are listed below.
| Category | Documents Required |

MDS Admission Through Management Quota
MDS admission through management quota, also called MDS direct admission, allows students to secure seats in private dental colleges under management quota seats, even with low NEET scores.
However, Candidates seeking admission under this quota must qualify the NEET-MDS/PG examinations and participate in the counselling process conducted by the respective state authorities under the management quota seats.
Unlike government or state quota seats, the management quota does not strictly rely on merit ranks. Instead, candidates are required to pay comparatively higher tuition fees for these seats. There are also no domicile restrictions, allowing candidates from any part of India to participate in the counselling process of other states under the management quota.
Total MDS Colleges and Seats in India
India has a total of 326 dental colleges, including 60 government, 34 deemed, and 231 private institutions. They offer a total of 7360 MDS seats, distributed across government, private, and deemed dental colleges.

- Number of private MDS seats: 5232
Karnataka is the state with the highest number of seats for MDS– 1206 seats, including 36 government, 260 deemed, and 910 private seats.
MDS Fees Overview
The fee structure for MDS programs in India varies depending on the type of institution offering the course. Government dental colleges generally have lower tuition fees as they are supported by state or central government funding. In contrast, private dental colleges and deemed universities usually have higher fee structures due to advanced infrastructure and facilities.
MDS Fee Structure Breakdown
- Government dental colleges: Rs 50,000/- to Rs 1,80,000/- per year
- Private dental colleges: Rs 2,00,000/- to 15,00,000/- per year

Conclusion
MDS admission in India is offered in various specializations through government, private, and deemed dental colleges, with the counselling process conducted by MCC and the respective state authorities. Qualifying NEET-MDS is mandatory for securing admission to these programs.
Having a clear understanding of the entire admission process, from the entrance examination to counselling and final seat allotment, helps students navigate it efficiently. Along with this, considering factors such as fee structure, seat availability, and the reputation of the college is equally important when making the right choice.
