MBBS Admission in Maharashtra Overview
Maharashtra is among the top states for pursuing medical education in India. The state presents more than 10,000 MBBS seats to students! Nearly every year, the competitive and open admissions process for MBBS in Maharashtra, which is based on NEET-UG scores, draws thousands of applicants. Approximately 12070 MBBS seats are available in the state, spread across more than 80 public and private colleges. There are several categories into which admissions are sorted. The Medical Counseling Committee (MCC) conducts centralized counseling to fill 15% of seats under the All India Quota (AIQ). The State Common Entrance Test Cell manages the State Quota, which reserves 85% of the seats.
Many students across the country prefer Maharashtra for MBBS because it has high academic standards, affordable tuition fees at public universities, and multiple seats. Dive into this blog to know about the nitty-gritties of MBBS education in Maharashtra!
Admission Process
In Maharashtra, one of the largest and most integrated states in India, access to medical education is made equal through a merit-based and transparent system. The Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER), Maharashtra, oversees the centralized counseling process for MBBS admissions based primarily on the NEET-UG score. There are various MBBS seats in the state available at government, private, deemed, and minority medical colleges.
Admission is categorized into two categories:
- State Quota (85%), governed by DMER, and
- All India Quota (15%), governed by the MCC.
Apart from a quota for economically weaker sections of society and disabled candidates, the State Quota also includes seats for General Merit, OBC, SC, ST, EWS, and other backward classes. Moreover, some private colleges provide NRI Quota seats besides Institutional or Management Quotas. To fulfill any vacancies, Maharashtra periodically holds Mop-Up and Stray Vacancy rounds.
The counselling process includes the following steps:
- Register online,
- Upload documents,
- Wait for the merit list,
- Fill college choices,
- Wait for the seat allotment, and
- Pay the tuition fees and report to the assigned college.
Eligibility Criteria
The following are the prerequisites for admission to Chandigarh’s MBBS program, common to all categories:

- It is necessary to receive at least 50% of aggregate marks (40% for reserved categories).
- Before December 31 of the entrance year, applicants must be 17 years old.

State Quota (85% of seats):
- Candidates must be Maharashtra residents or have studied 10th and 12th grade in the state.
- Have a Maharashtra domicile certificate or a school-leaving certificate.
NRI Quota:
- The candidate must be an NRI or have a first-degree relationship with an NRI.
- Must be eligible for NEET-UG.
- It is required to have valid proof of NRI status and relationship.

- All Indian citizens who meet the NEET requirements can apply.
