MBBS Admission in India 2025

To be frank, the medical admission process for MBBS is a bit complicated. Read this carefully to understand the complete procedure for taking MBBS admission 2025.

First of all, the candidate must meet the eligibility criteria and also qualify for NEET UG.

I would like to tell you that all admissions to medical colleges are done through centralized counseling. There are two counselling one is conducted by the MCC and the other by the respective authority of the state government.

Qualify NEET UG, register for counselling, attend the counselling, and get admission into MBBS.
It may seem simple, but the process is more complex. In India, there are two types of counselling: state counselling and central counselling.

You cannot apply to every state in India. This is because MBBS admission is divided into Open States and Closed States.
Open States allow students from any Indian state to apply for private medical college seats.
Closed States allow only students with domicile in that particular state to apply for private medical college seats.

MBBS seats in India are divided into different quotas:

  • All India Quota (AIQ): 15% of the seats in government medical colleges are reserved for students from any state based on merit.
  • State Quota: 85% of the seats are reserved for students who have domicile in that particular state.
Within the State Quota, there are reservations for:
    • Economically Weaker Sections (EWS)
    • Other Backward Classes (OBC)
    • Scheduled Castes (SC)
    • Scheduled Tribes (ST)
    • Persons with Disabilities (PwD)
  • Management Quota: Some private colleges also have a Management Quota, where they fill a portion of seats (usually around 15%) based on their own selection criteria.

There is also an NRI Quota, where certain seats are reserved for Non-Resident Indian candidates in private medical colleges.

Myth-busting: There is no such concept as direct admission in MBBS or MBBS admission through donation. To get MBBS admission in India, a student must qualify the NEET-UG exam and secure at least the minimum required cutoff marks. The student must also register and participate in all counselling rounds conducted by the central counselling authority (MCC) or the respective state/UT NEET-UG counselling authorities. Let it be clear: no student can get MBBS admission in India without qualifying the NEET entrance exam.

A: No. You must qualify for the NEET-UG entrance exam if you want to get MBBS admission in any of the medical colleges.

2. For joining MBBS in management or the NRI quota, should I qualify for NEET?

A: Yes, even if you take MBBS admission through NRI or management quota, you must qualify for NEET-UG without fail.

3. Can I take MBBS admission without attending the counseling?

A: No, you must attend the counseling procedures if you want to be admitted to any medical college. Please don’t forget to register for the counseling procedure.

4. Apart from tuition fees, what extra charges will be there?

A: You will have to pay hostel, mess, material fees, uniform, books, and examination fees. But, in a few colleges, they will charge transportation and a few other fees too. It depends on the colleges too.

A: Yes, you can. If you completed four and half years of academics and a one-year internship in any recognized medical college you can work anywhere in India.

A: It depends on which state you are coming from. But I will recommend Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry, UP, Delhi, Maharashtra, and Kerala, because of the patient’s exposure, the quality of the colleges, and the standard of education in these states.
