History of MBBS Admission in Karnataka

Let’s first have a look into the history of MBBS Admissions in Karnataka in chronological order.

Pre-2000s: Direct Admissions & State Exams

Before 2000, medical colleges in Karnataka conducted their own entrance exams or admitted students based on PUC marks. Government colleges followed state regulations, while private colleges had independent admission processes.

Early 2000s – KCET & COMEDK System

The Karnataka Common Entrance Test (KCET) was introduced for government college admissions, while private colleges formed COMEDK to conduct their own entrance exam. This system standardized admissions but allowed private colleges to retain control over management seats.

2016-2019 – NEET Becomes Mandatory

NEET UG became mandatory for all medical college admissions in India in 2016 following a Supreme Court ruling that mandated NEET as the sole entrance exam for undergraduate medical courses, effectively replacing all other state-level medical entrance exams; this change came into effect for the academic year 2017 onwards.

The Karnataka government introduced fee regulations, though private colleges continued to charge higher fees. Government medical seats were reserved 85% for Karnataka students and 15% for All India Quota (AIQ). Special reservations were provided for rural, Kannada-medium and other students with reservations.
