According to NMC in 2025 there are 73 medical colleges in Karnataka with approximately 12,545 MBBS seats.
History of MBBS Admission in Karnataka
Let’s first have a look into the history of MBBS Admissions in Karnataka in chronological order.
Pre-2000s: Direct Admissions & State Exams
Before 2000, medical colleges in Karnataka conducted their own entrance exams or admitted students based on PUC marks. Government colleges followed state regulations, while private colleges had independent admission processes.
Early 2000s – KCET & COMEDK System
The Karnataka Common Entrance Test (KCET) was introduced for government college admissions, while private colleges formed COMEDK to conduct their own entrance exam. This system standardized admissions but allowed private colleges to retain control over management seats.
2016-2019 – NEET Becomes Mandatory
NEET UG became mandatory for all medical college admissions in India in 2016 following a Supreme Court ruling that mandated NEET as the sole entrance exam for undergraduate medical courses, effectively replacing all other state-level medical entrance exams; this change came into effect for the academic year 2017 onwards.
2020-Present – Recent Trends
The Karnataka government introduced fee regulations, though private colleges continued to charge higher fees. Government medical seats were reserved 85% for Karnataka students and 15% for All India Quota (AIQ). Special reservations were provided for rural, Kannada-medium and other students with reservations.
Karnataka MBBS Admission Eligibility
According to our experts the eligibility criteria won’t change much compared to last year and most likely will remain same for the academic session 2025-26. The following was the eligibility criteria for admission to MBBS colleges from NEET 2024 for the students of Karnataka and the other states–
- Qualify in the NEET 2024 exam.
- Meet the minimum NEET 2024 cutoff percentile.
- Complete 10+2 with: Physics, Chemistry, Biology (PCB) and English with a 50% percentile in PCB for the General category candidates and 40% in PCB for SC/ST category candidates.
- Be an Indian citizen (except for NRI candidates taking admission through NRI quota)
- Be at least 17 years old by December 31st of the year of admission

Karnataka MBBS Registration 2025
There were two counseling processes for getting admission to Karnataka medical colleges in 2025. 1st one was MCC counseling process and the 2nd one was KEA counseling process.
You can register to MCC counseling if you want a deemed medical college or a few specific government medical colleges (15%) in Karnataka or You can register to KEA counseling if you want any of the private medical colleges or most of the government medical colleges (85%) in Karnataka.
