MBBS Admission in Tripura Overview

Did you know that Tripura is one of India’s smaller but more active centers for medical education? It offers 400 MBBS seats across government and private colleges, which is limited yet attractive.

In Tripura, there are various kinds of MBBS admissions. About 85% of the seats are held by the State Quota, while 15% are held by the All India Quota (AIQ). Tripura’s MBBS admissions procedure is solely dependent on NEET UG. The Directorate of Medical Education (DME) in Tripura conducts counseling for the State Quota, which consists of several rounds, including a stray vacancy round. Candidates must complete choice-filling, medical fitness tests, document verification, and seat distribution based on merit. The MCC oversees the counseling for AIQ seats.

There are roughly 400 MBBS seats available in Tripura overall: 150 by Agartala Government Medical College, 100 by Tripura Medical College and Dr. B R A M Teaching Hospital, and another 150 by Tripura Santiniketan Medical College & Hospital. Admission Process

The NEET UG score is the primary criterion for admission to Tripura’s MBBS colleges. State-level counseling for different admission quotas is carried out by the Government of Tripura’s Directorate of Medical Education (DME).

The primary categories of admissions include:

• All India Quota (AIQ): 15% of the MBBS seats in government medical colleges, such as Agartala Government Medical College, are set aside for applicants from all over India under AIQ. The Medical Counseling Committee (MCC) conducts counseling to fill these seats.

• State Quota: Candidates with a Tripuran domicile are eligible for 85% of the seats in government medical colleges and a sizable percentage of the seats in private medical colleges (Tripura Medical College & Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Memorial Teaching Hospital, and the recently founded Tripura Santiniketan Medical College).
  
• Management Quota: Private medical colleges offer seats under this quota.  Compared to merit seats, these seats have lower NEET cut-offs and higher fees.

The counseling procedure requires applicants to register online, verify documents, wait for the release of a state merit list, choice filling and locking, and endure the seat allocation rounds.

Eligibility Criteria

The following are the prerequisites for admission to Tripura’s MBBS program, common to all categories:

• Completing 10+2 years of education with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English courses.
• It is necessary to receive at least 50% of aggregate marks (40% for reserved categories).
• Before December 31 of the entrance year, applicants must be 17 years old.
• The most crucial requirement for admission is passing the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG), which assesses applicants’ proficiency in chemistry, biology, and physics.

Here are some prerequisites that must be fulfilled by candidates applying under different quotas:

• All India Quota: Candidates from all over India are eligible to apply for 15% of the AGMC seats under this category, with no residency requirements. The Medical Counseling Committee is in charge of admissions for these seats (MCC).

• State Quota: Approximately 85% of seats in government medical colleges are covered by this category. It is only available to Tripuran permanent residents who have lived there for at least ten years. State employees stationed outside the state, central government employees serving in Tripura, offspring of All India Service officers in the state, and defense personnel staying in the state for a certain amount of time are all exempted. Reservations are made for SC, ST, OBC, EWS, APST, and PwD candidates during the counseling process for these seats by the Directorate of Medical Education (DME).

• Management Quota: Even though NEET certification is still required, the cut-off scores are typically lower and the cost is much more under this category. Candidates from other states are also eligible to run for these seats.

• NRI Quota: Private universities like TMC offer seats under this category. In addition to being NRIs, OCIs, PIOs, or sponsored by first-degree NRI relatives, candidates must meet NEET requirements. Usually, this quota requires a separate document verification and counseling procedure.

Documents Required

There are two private MBBS colleges in Tripura: the newly established Tripura Santiniketan Medical College (TSMC) and Tripura Medical College & Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Memorial Teaching Hospital (TMC). Both provide the 5.5-year MBBS course, including a one-year internship, and have approval from the National Medical Commission. NEET UG scores are utilized for determining admission.

Founded in 2006, Tripura Medical College (TMC), located close to Hapania, admits 100 MBBS students per year. It spans a 31-acre campus and is linked to the 600-bed multispecialty Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Memorial Teaching Hospital. The hospital provides 24-hour emergency services along with significant clinical exposure through units such as NICU, PICU, ICU, and burn unit.

Located on a 20.40-acre campus, Tripura Santiniketan Medical College (TSMC) is linked to an educational hospital with over 1100 beds.  TSMC lays immense stress on modern facilities, including well-furnished libraries, simulation-based skills laboratories, and smart classrooms.  The college has hostel facilities for girls and boys separately.
