Assam Medical PG Counseling 2024: The Complete Guide

Most of the students who are from the northeast about the counseling procedures and medical PG admission are missing the correct guidance. So, I thought I would write an in-depth article about Medical PG Admission and Counseling Procedures in Assam.

I am Dr.Sushil Agarwal, natively from Assam who has more than 16 years of experience in guiding students through the NEET counseling procedures.

I would like to start by giving you a basic idea about medical colleges in Assam.

List of Medical Colleges in Assam

Currently, 6 Government Medical colleges in the state of Assam offer PG courses in almost all the branches of post-graduation. Along with that, two institutes, B Barooah Cancer Institute and Lokpriya Gopinath Regional Institute of Mental Health, also offers some seat in Radiotherapy and Psychiatry.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Friday, while signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Bright Star Investments Pvt Ltd for the development of infrastructure of the second medical college in Guwahati, that Assam will have 24 medical colleges within the next five years, greatly improving the access of doctors and healthcare in the state.

The names of the Medical colleges are:

  • Guwahati Medical College.
  • Assam Medical College.
  • Silchar Medical College.
  • Jorhat Medical College.
  • Tezpur Medical College.
  • Fakhruddin  Ali Ahmed Medical College (Borpeta).

Medical Aspirants for NEET PG Assam State

There here were approximately 2200 MBBS graduate students who appeared for NEET from the state of Assam for post-graduate seats in the year 2020.

Approximately 1,200 students got Eligible in the first round, and then 400 more MBBS students were added to the list after the Eligibility score was lowered before the mop-up round.

The Incentive Structure for students who have served in Remote and Difficult areas in Assam

The students who have served such areas are subject to 3% incentives in marks per year of the service, not exceeding a total of 9%.

Examples of names of such areas are Karbi Anglong districts, Sadiya Sub-division, Majuli Sub-division, Dhakuakhana Sub-division, and South Salmara Sub-division.

(Approximately 40 students claimed these benefit marks were above 550 or got above 550 scores after revision of marks ).

Number of Post Graduate Seats available in the Medical Colleges in Assam

The total number of PG seats (Both clinical and Non-Clinical) available in the medical colleges of Assam is approximately 652. Out of these, 50% of seats are for the state, and the rest 50% is in AIQ.

Out of 326 seats available for state counseling, 216 seats are in clinical subjects.

However, the lowest number of seats are available in Pulmonary Medicine, Radiotherapy, Dermatology, and FSM branches.

The highest number of seats are available in the MD Medicine branch.

Ranks

If we look at the trends of counseling in the medical colleges in the state of Assam, we can understand that almost all the seats get over by state rank 700.

Tough competition is seen among the clinical branches and MD Radiology. These get over under rank 500.

Students who have options for Non-Clinical subjects or MD Pathology should wait till the last round of counseling.

How to Select a college/branch of Interest

This is a very important part in which I am going to advise the perfect approach to attending counseling so that the student doesn’t miss out on his favorite branch.

Since the number of Medical Colleges in the northeast part of India is very small, the number of seats for post-graduation is comparatively less.

It is impossible for all the graduates to either get the branch of their choice or the college of their choice.

Due to a lack of knowledge and information, a student fails to get his desired branch of interest.

The competition for the clinical branches and Radiodiagnosis is unmatched. However, there are some self-financing institutions and deemed universities in India where you can get your masters with the rank secured.

Lots of states in India have medical colleges with comparatively lower fees, which invites students from all over the country to study in their institutions, for example, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, etc. Lots of Deemed universities are also there that have a very reasonable fee structure.

So, Students who have not been able to bag a seat in the medical colleges in Assam can also try their luck in other states through counseling so that they don’t miss out on the opportunity due to lack of information or knowledge.

Scope of Non-Clinical and Clinical Branches in Assam

The healthcare profession is a most respectable and dignified profession. However, the quality of a good life is also dependent upon the branch and interest you pursue.

Most of the students look for the clinical branches, Non-Clinicals being the second option. However, the scope of Non-Clinical branches in my eyes for the students of NE India is no less.

There has been a growing demand for these professionals since the requirements in the academic sector for the upcoming medical colleges in Assam have seen a surge.

The establishment of Lots of government medical colleges is in the plan of the Government of Assam. Very recently, a medical college was opened in Diphu.

Also, there are proposals for establishing medical colleges in Tinsukia, Kokrajhar, and Karbi Anglong. Once these fall into place, the demand for all doctors will increase in the future.

We have Emailed the answer on your query.
Also , in this score that chances are negligible for 50 % all India Quota Seats.
You should try in Private seats in Private medical colleges and Private deemed universities only.
      Thanks

Chances are limited but however you can try.
My suggestion would be to register for private deemed universities as well by paying a refundable security deposit of 2 lakh in MCC.
      ThankYou
