What is MBBS NRI Quota?
The NRI quota means a certain percentage of seats reserved in educational institutions, including medical colleges across India, for students fitting certain criteria. These seats are set aside for those who are either Non-Resident Indians themselves or have a Non-Resident Indian sponsoring or related to them.
The NRI quota essentially allows such students to gain admission to these institutes with relatively lower scores or ranks compared to general merit students.
Importance of MBBS NRI Quota 2024-25
If a candidates has secured low score in NEET but has the NRI support, either the student could be an NRI candidates or has an NRI sponsor, then despite their low score they can get a seat in the government medical colleges or private medical colleges.
However, the fees for NRI quota seats tends to be significantly higher, often double then the regular fees. The exact percentage of seats reserved under the NRI quota and the eligibility requirements can vary across different states and specific colleges/universities in India.
Students should know that it is not necessary that every state medical colleges will offer NRI quota, and even if a state has an NRI quota, it is not necessary that it exists in both government and private medical colleges of that state.
In some states of India, the government medical colleges offer the NRI seats and not the private medical colleges, and vice versa.

MBBS Admission in NRI Quota Eligibility Criteria
To determine your eligibility for MBBS admission in medical colleges in India under the NRI Quota, review the following criteria:
Eligibility Categories
- Born Abroad with Indian-Origin Parents: You were born abroad but your parents are of Indian origin.
- Indian Citizens Living Abroad: Your parents are Indian citizens but you are staying abroad for business or employment.
- Indian Origin Living Abroad: You are currently living abroad and are either a citizen of India or of Indian origin.
- Living Abroad for Studies: You are from India but currently living abroad for studies.
- Government Employees’ Children: Your parents are central or government employees, and you are living abroad for studies during a deputation period.
- Long-Term NRI: You must have lived abroad as an NRI for at least five years, meaning you should have completed your 10th and 12th grades in that particular country.
Mandatory Eligibility Criteria
- Educational Qualification:
- You should have completed your 10+2 examination with subjects including Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.
- You must have secured a minimum of 50% marks (40% for SC/ST/OBC).
- Age Requirement: You should have completed 17 years of age by 31st December of the year of admission.
- Passport: You should hold a valid passport.
- NEET-UG Qualification: You must qualify in the NEET-UG exam and secure the minimum qualifying marks.
- Category reservation benefits apply only to state-domicile students. Students from other states qualifying under any reserved category (OBC/ST/SC) are eligible for Deemed University Medical Colleges only.
- Counseling Participation:
- Admission through the NRI Quota or Management Quota is possible only if you register and attend all the rounds of counseling conducted by the respective authorities of each state in India.
- If seats remain vacant after the MOP-UP round, those registered for the online counseling can take the seats directly.
MBBS Admission in NRI Quota in Karnataka
The NRI Quota MBBS Admission Process in Karnataka varies from state to state. In the government medical colleges of Karnataka, there are no NRI quota seats. Instead, NRI quota seats are available only in private medical colleges and Deemed Universities. For example, in Rajasthan, the NRI quota exists in government medical colleges but not in private ones.
- Candidates will have to qualify in the NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrances Test) to be eligible for admission to NRI Quota.
- Candidates will then have to register for and attend the counselling conducted by the respective authorities. For private medical colleges, the student will have to register for state counselling conducted by the KEA, whereas for deemed medical colleges, they will have to register under MCC counselling.

MCC Counseling Procedure for MBBS 2024
The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) conducts a centralized online counseling process for MBBS admissions under the 15% All India Quota (AIQ) seats. This comprehensive procedure ensures a fair and transparent allocation of seats based on the candidates’ merit, preferences, and availability. To participate in the counseling, aspirants must meet the eligibility criteria and adhere to the step-by-step guidelines provided by the MCC.
Step 1: Registration
The first step in the MCC counseling process is registration on the official MCC website (mcc.nic.in). Candidates provide personal details, NEET UG 2024 roll number, rank, and scores, along with a non-refundable registration fee and a refundable security deposit. Payment is made online using available methods, with fees and deposit amounts varying based on the candidate’s category and institution type.
Step 2: Choice Filling and Locking
After successfully registering, candidates log in to the MCC website and submit their preferred colleges and courses. Preparing a tentative list beforehand is advised. Candidates should align their choices with their aspirations and priorities. Once satisfied, they lock their choices, noting that modifications are not possible after locking.
Step 3: Seat Allotment
After candidates submit their choices and lock them, MCC processes the submissions to allocate seats based on merit, preferences, and availability. This process occurs in multiple rounds. Initially, a provisional allotment result is released, allowing candidates to review and raise objections if needed. After resolving objections, MCC publishes the final seat allotment list.
Step 4: Document Upload
After seat allotment results are declared, candidates should upload required documents to the MCC website for verification, including NEET admit card, rank letter, mark sheets, certificates, and photographs. Uploaded documents should be clear, legible, and meet format and size requirements. This process confirms eligibility and secures allotted seats.
Step 5: Reporting to the Allotted Institute
The last step in MCC counseling is reporting to the allotted medical college. Candidates must visit with original documents for verification and pay admission fees to confirm their seat. Adhering to the reporting schedule and carrying all necessary documents is crucial to avoid complications in the admission process.
MCC Counseling 2024 Update
- OCI candidates can even take up UR category management seats, unlike last year, where they had to select only NRI seats.
- The fourth round, i.e., the stray vacancy round, which used to be conducted at the college level offline, will be conducted online via MCC counseling.
KEA Counseling Procedure for MBBS 2024
The First step after qualifying for NEET-UG is to get register online with the Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA).
The KEA website will host the calendar of events on its official website. The calendar of events will notify the dates for Registration, Document verification, option entry, Fee Payment, uploading of Admission order letter, and last date for online and offline reporting to the college.
There would be a registration amount of Rs 2000, and apart from that, the KEA takes an adjustable security deposit of 1 lakh in the mop-up round to prevent seat wastage. KEA also undertook the entire amount of fee DD as a security deposit for the special stray vacancy round, which was conducted online.
This means, If any student wants to opt for NRI Quota or Q category seats among the medical colleges whose fee structure ranges from 24 lakhs per annum to 50 lakhs per annum excluding food and accommodation, the student has to deposit that particular amount DD in KEA before the start of special stray vacancy round of counseling. Then, only the portal was opened for those candidates to do option entry.
KEA Counselling Process First Step to Stray Vacancy Round
After having a thorough understanding of the basic things that I have mentioned above, I would like to guide you on the counseling process. It is a very crucial and important step.
(Students who want to opt for NRI Quota seats can get themselves converted into the NRI Category with the help of supporting documents hosted on their official website. It is advised to go through the fee structure hosted on the official website thoroughly for each college. The list of students whose documents have been accepted and granted permission to opt for medical seats in the NRI category will be hosted on the website)
First, the student has to register on the KEA official website by paying the registration fees and refundable security deposit ( if any ) to participate in the counseling procedure. Then, he has to upload the necessary documents in the KEA portal in PDF format for document verification.
The date for the upload of lists of students who got verified would be hosted on the KEA website. After this, the student has to download the verification slip. This slip contains a secret key, which is required to do the option entry.
While doing the option entry, a student would be able to opt for the colleges as per the fee structure mentioned. The fee structure of each quota seat, such as P, Q, and NRI quotas, would be mentioned on the side of each college so that a student doesn’t choose the wrong options /colleges he is not interested in.
After this step, there would be an announcement of the results of the first round. The procedure for payment of fees with the last date and the procedure for joining/reporting to the college with the last date would be mentioned in the calendar of events hosted on the kea website. The second round of counseling and the mop-up round would continue in the same manner.

Direct Admission in Stray Vacancy round and the requirement
After the mop-up round is conducted, there are always some seats in lots of private medical colleges that are left vacant. These seats are mainly NRI Quota seats or Q quota seats. These seats are left vacant because of mainly their very high fee structure.
Approximately, the fee structure of such seats, which are left vacant for MBBS, ranges from 24 lakh pa – 50 lakh pa. So, the counseling process for these unallotted / Not Reported seats will be conducted in online.
But from 2023 onwards, even the last round was conducted online by not only KEA but by all the counseling authorities of all the states for private medical colleges in that particular state.
However, since this takes place at the last moment or the last date of the admission process, it is advisable for a parent to get in touch with a good education consultant who is well-updated with the entire process and well-informed.
Since this is a very complex process, either a parent can keep himself updated with information about all the private medical colleges or can get in touch with a good and reliable consultant who can guide you on it. NRI Quota in Deemed University in Karnataka 2024
For the Deemed Universities, a student has to apply through MCC. This authority is responsible for counseling MBBS seats of the private DEEMED Universities all over India.
There would be a separate refundable/adjustable security deposit of approximately 2 lakhs to register for counseling of such seats apart from a Non-refundable registration amount of Rs 5000.
The students who are opting for NRI Seats have to pay the same registration amount.

The NRI Quota fees in private medical colleges in Karnataka:
- NRI Quota – Fifteen percent of the total seats (15%) in any private medical college are reserved for NRI category students. You need not necessarily need to be an NRI to opt for such a category of seats. However, there are certain guidelines and formalities to be followed. My father is an NRI working in the Middle East for the past 15 years. Whereas I have studied in India from 1st class to 12th class and I want to take part in the NRI counselling at KEA. As per the attached eligibility criteria for NRI candidate in 2020, I qualify all the requirements and my father has all the supporting documents. But as I have studied in India from 1st class the point m- (m. Candidate’s study certificate for having studied outside India where applicable for the qualifying examination) is contradictory.
