MDS Admission through Management Quota 2023 – The Ultimate Guide

Welcome to the exclusive edition of CareerMudhra where you will be given complete guidance to MDS admission. This guide is exclusively for dentists who want to join MDS through management or the NRI quota. I will also break all the myths about MDS management seat costs, admission procedures, etc. 😀

Do remember, to take admission to any dental college in India you must qualify for the NEET-MDS exam.

I would like you to understand that there is nothing like DIRECT ADMISSION from the academic year 2017. It is completely illegal.

Last year, I know students personally who have taken admission to vacant seats at the last moment for a very cheap price. I also thought it was a great deal for them.

Later after one week, this news came, which almost shocked everyone. The high court of Karnataka completely canceled the management or NRI seats that are not taken through the common centralized counseling procedures.

NEET MDS 21 was conducted early and the results have been declared. The minimum qualifying marks for the category students were declared as 227 and above, whereas for the general category, it has been declared as 259 and above.
Students have been waiting for the counseling procedures to start. MDS Admission through Management quota can also be taken through counseling only.
Students have to participate in the MCC counseling for seats in the deemed universities. They also have to attend counseling by the respective state DME for admission into any of the private dental colleges in that particular state dental college.
For example, a student looking for an MDS seat in a private dental college in Karnataka and UP should attend the counseling procedures conducted by KEA in Karnataka and UPDGME for selecting colleges in UP.

MDS admission through management quota guidance

You won’t come to know the issues now. In MDS there is only one university exam and that too at the end of three years, a few universities changed the pattern in 2019. What if after three years of hard work, you come to know you haven’t been allotted any seats? Even I am not an astrologer, these are just my views.

Check the link below to read the high court of Karnataka’s decision on filling management and NRI quota seats.

Approximate Fees for MDS in Private Colleges

Here I will tell you the fee structure of colleges where I can provide and that will be the lowest fee structure. These will be the fee structure in the above-average dental college with good patient exposure. I had mentioned the total package which is for three years, including hostel, food, and material charges.

  • Orthodontics – 22 Lakhs Total Package including Hostel, Food, Tuition Fees Etc.
  • Endodontics – 22 Lakhs Total Package including food and accommodation.
  • Surgery -22 Lakhs Total Package including hostel, fees, and food.
  • Prosthodontics – 15-18 Lakhs Including hostel and food.
  • Pedodontics – 13-15 Lakhs total package including accommodation.
  • Periodontics – 12-13 Lakhs total including hostel and food.
  • Non-clinical – 6-9 Lakhs total package including everything.

Most of the colleges in North India don’t charge any material fees. But private dental colleges in South India will charge you material charges ranging from Rs.70,000 to Rs.1,25,000 depending on the college.

Before taking admission to any private dental college please re-confirm about the extra charges. I had also written a detailed article about the MDS fee structure in different colleges in India.

Not Interested to take MDS Admission with me? 😀

Not at all a problem. You can search for the best educational consultants in your area and I would be really happy about your awesome career.

If you want to choose a genuine consultant who deals in MDS admission you should keep a few things in mind. I will list it down which will be easy to select a consultant apt for you.

You should go for Educational Consultants who are:

  • Having a good track record in placing candidates in different dental colleges in India.
  • Have a permanent office, which you can contact in case of any issues.
  • Providing loan papers for applying for bank loans.
  • Providing a competitive fee package with an easy installment payment facility.
  • Dealing with affiliated and DCI-recognized colleges only.
  • Providing very good after-support.

These are the main things I would look into if I were standing in your place. 😛

How to Select a College for MDS Admission?

I will explain to you how to select a college for your dental post-graduation in a simple way. The major two things to keep in mind are the patient exposure in the college and the HOD or PG Guide in the specific college.

Patient Exposure:

  • I would strictly prefer you to opt for colleges which are having very good patient exposure. You are doing your post-graduation to learn more and in-depth about what you studied during your UG. So make sure there are more than enough patients to treat and learn in college.
  • You should enquire through your friends and contacts about the patients. In some colleges, there will be a lot of patients, but the student-patient ratio will be worst. So also do enquire about the student-patient ratio.

Collect HOD or Guide Information:

  • Through your contact, you should inquire about the HOD or the Guide in a specific department of a college. I had heard many colleges have very good faculty. But, they might very harsh in treating students and teaching.
  • Don’t think about the faculty of other departments of the college. Only do care for the faculty of your required department.
  • In my college, I had seen Endo as the coolest department and the students there are able to learn a lot.

Cost for Thesis under the Specific HOD:

  • Everyone reading this knows you have to do a thesis during your dental PG.
  • Investigate through your friends how much the expense for a thesis during PG is under the specific HOD. I know a friend who does MDS in Endodontics and was having an expense of Rs.1 lakh for the thesis. On the other hand, his friend is doing a thesis just for Rs.40k.
  • This might help candidates who are having financial problems.

These are from my personal and my friend’s experiences. That is the reason I am sharing it in a simple and personal way.

Other secondary things you want to keep in mind while selecting a college(Not so important, but some may take this very important :P):

  • Location of College and Distance from your native place. You can check for this, as you won’t be able to bunk a lot of sessions during your PG.
  • Climatic Conditions of the place. Some students might be allergic to a cold climate and some to others. These are personal preferences etc.

MDS Admission Procedure for Management Quota

Before a few years, it was easy to get an MDS seat in any private dental college in India. But, nowadays after the NEET-MDS was introduced, there are many procedures you have to go through to take MDS admission through management or NRI quota.

I will be using a general scenario so that you will be getting an idea about the procedures.

You must decide in which state you have to take MDS admission. Think you want to join a dental college in Bangalore for MDS admission, then you must attend the complete counseling procedures of the state.

The steps involved in short:

  • Register for state counseling.
  • Document Verification.
  • First-round counseling.
  • Second Round counseling.
  • MOP-UP Round.

Step 1: Register for 1st Round of Counseling

To take MDS admission you have to register for state counseling which will be conducted by different authorities of a state. For example, in Karnataka, the state counseling is conducted by KEA or Karnataka Examination Authority.

There will be a registration fee of around Rs.1000 to Rs.5000 which varies every year. You must register using all the correct information.

Tip: Please give the same mobile number and e-mail ID which you used during NEET entrance registration.

Step 2: Document Verification

Now after the registrations are over, they will verify your documents according to the rank. Normally the document verification used to be offline.

But due to the COVID-19 lockdown, the document verifications have been made online. In a few states, you have to deposit a security amount of Rs.1 lakh which will be adjusted in your fees or refunded.

Step 3: 1st Round Counseling

Now using the login credentials, you have to choose the choice of college and department you need and lock the choice. After a few days, the results will be published.

If you weren’t allotted a seat, then you can attend the second round of counseling.

Step 4: 2nd Round Counseling

The procedure is the same as the first round of counseling. If you weren’t able to get a seat in the second round then you can attend the MOP-UP round.

Step 4: MOP-UP Round

During the MOP-UP round, all the leftover seats will be allotted to students according to their ranks. Normally it used to be an offline process, where the students have to come down to the counseling center.

But this year, due to the COVID issue we can’t predict how it will go. Let’s hope for the best.

The seats which will be left over after the MOP-UP round will be given to the college management, which can be given to students on the mentioned fees.

They will be keeping a deadline for the admissions and the admission will be closed within 10-15 days after the MOP-UP round.

I had listed only six dental colleges in Karnataka which have excellent patient exposure and faculty by knowledge. You can also check for other dental colleges according to the department you need.

I am not stating that other dental colleges are not up to the mark. 😛

There are more than 300 dental colleges in India and out of that majority are private dental colleges. Here I will divide the colleges budget-wise and quality-wise. For joining these colleges you need a better NEET MDS rank and budget too.

  • SDM, Dharwad, Karnataka.
  • Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Manipal.
  • AB Shetty Dental College, Mangalore.
  • Bapuji Dental College, Davanegere.
  • AJ Institute of Dental Sciences.
  • JSS Dental College, Mysore.
  • MS Ramaiah Dental College, Bangalore.

In the above-listed colleges, almost all the departments are good in means of quality and patient exposure. I would prefer you to choose the department first and then select the college.

There might be some colleges that is well known for a department, like the Orthodontics department is in demand at Bapuji Dental College, Davengere, etc.

And the other category of colleges is budget colleges, which have above-average patient exposure and are a lot more worth for what you pay as fees. A few of these colleges are:

  • Institute of Dental Studies and Technologies, Modinagar.
  • Subarti Dental College, Meerut.
  • Sharavathi Dental College and Hospital, Shimoga.
  • Bangalore Institute of Dental Sciences, Bangalore.
  • ITS Dental College, Muradnagar.

Before you give me a call please decide your preferred department and budget so I can suggest to you the best options suitable for you. I know colleges that have fees starting from 4.5 lakhs per annum for departments like Ortho, Endo, Surgery, etc.

List of Dental Colleges I deal with:

This is the list of dental colleges I deal with for MDS admission through the management quota in Karnataka. If you are from any other place I will help you out with it.

    • Dear Surya,

Congrats on your qualification in NEET 2018.

The fee will be fixed by the KEA or Karnataka Examination Authority in between the counseling. With your rank, it would be possible to get a prosthodontic seat in Davengere. SDM Dharwad is unpredictable due to its high reputation.

Last year fees for NEET MDS was around 7 lakh per annum.

And about learning and torture, it completely depends on the HOD and staff there. Please do enquire through your friends regarding the same.

  35. I have a big question in my mind after reading all this..
Afrer taking admission in govt dental college through management or NRI quota..do we will also get the same salary like other docs will get during PG?????

    • Dear Ambika,

First of all there are no management or NRI seats in government dental colleges. And if you complete your MDS through mangement or NRI quota the salary will be same. The salary depends on many factors like your experience, skill etc.

    • Dear Hassan,

NEET qualification is mandatory to join for MDS in any dental college. 50 percentile for General category and 40 percentile for other categories. There are chances that at the last moment, DCI will reduce the cut off marks if seats are vacant. But there is no guarantee of the same.

You can get colleges in MP, but you must qualify NEET MDS.

welcome to our blog on MDS admission through Management quota.
You can wait for the second round of counselling. There has been a trend of lowering of qualifying marks after the second round and before the mop up round.
You can wait and watch till that time . If the trend of lowering of qualifying percentile still persists for the MDS Session 2022 , then you will surely be eligible and can opt for the colleges and branches of your choice.
I hope that i have been able to answer your query.
      Best of Luck.
      Regards.
